Over the past six or eight months prior to our wedding in late May, my wife Erin and I worked our way through the Alpha Marriage Course, and found it extremely useful and inspiring. We both had the dubious advantage of taking the course after failed marriages, during which we learned many of our "lessons" the hard way. As a result, the course confirmed attitudes and practices that Erin and I were already using, particularly in the area of communication and conflict resolution.
For
younger couples who have never been married, this course can
be particularly helpful. It blends proven methodologies with
a continuing awareness that God must be an integral part of
a successful and rewarding Christian marriage. It reminds
two people who love one another that they are not alone, that
a loving God is present with them to offer counsel if they'll
just listen.
While she was in China, Erin presented an overview of the Marriage Course to Chinese couples, and left some materials with them to read and study. Like the Alpha course itself, the Marriage Course is packed with universal principles that, when applied, can immeasurably strengthen belief and behavior. Regardless of culture, whether in Shanghai or Charlotte, couples need to be able to understand one another, to communicate, to resolve conflict and to enjoy sex in the context that it is God's most precious gift to married people. The Marriage Course leaps cultural boundaries to teach these requisites to a healthy, happy and long-lasting marriage.
We recommend that every effort be made to offer the course in Chinese to as many Chinese as possible.
