Alpha Testimony by KK Lam

I first heard of the Alpha course through the ECC Church Bulletin. My wife, who is still a non-believer, suggested that I sign up for the course. Unfortunately, for some reason, I failed to do so. A few months later, another opportunity to take the course was announced in church and my wife proceeded to sign me up to attend it. A week later, as we were riding a bus, we passed outside the ECCC church and saw a large poster announcing the Alpha course. So, I was really looking forward to finding out more about the course at the Alpha Introduction Dinner. I was also attracted by the background of the evening speaker, Mr. Steve Miller.

I recall that after the first week where Nicky Gumbel talked about the topic "Who is Jesus" I went around to my colleagues at work and asked them if they have heard of Alpha. Several of my Christian friends told me that they had taken the course a few years ago. One colleague said that he was an Alpha course leader!

The course got more and more interesting and it encouraged me to read the Bible more regularly. My group members were very friendly and caring. After the end of the course, I volunteered to be a helper. At the end of the course, some of us wanted to continue to meet. So we borrowed the "A Life Worth Living" set of tapes (also by Nicky Gumbel) to continue our weekly meetings.

I have learned that the talks are very informative and encouraging. Though I have been a Christian for close to 10 years, I have realized that I was not confident sharing my faith with others. Now, after taking the Alpha Course (and the Evangelism Explosion course), I am more confident to share the Great News of Eternal Life with family and friends.

Currently, I am co-leading a new Alpha group at ECC. I have also started to invite CityU graduate students from the mainland to spend a couple of hours a week on campus to view the Alpha talks and share our faith with them.

In summary, the Alpha course has given me the opportunity to deepen my relationship with God based on evidence and faith but not on blind faith alone. And that is what Alpha or the "beginning" is all about.
