Many take part in inviting friends and relatives in the city-wide Alpha Invitation!

We love to invite our friends, our collegaues and family to an event that we feel is meaningful and that they will really enjoy, don't we? We take every opportunity to remind our parents to check out something that we know they will have fun, right? We do this not only because we love them, are concerned for them, but also because we know this will benefit their lives. These are just a few reasons why we are so excited by the special Hong Kong city-wide event of the Alpha Invitation; an invitation to a great dinner, but also to much much more!

The ultimate goal is that we want the people we love and care for to be able to find the meaning of life, to live a more fulfilling life where they can see the world with a broad perspective that also helps them truly understand their own needs and the needs of others !

The Alpha Invitation with its promotions all around Hong Kong on buses, churches, schools and tram stations are just a beginning, and the story of each of the participants is yet to be told. Churches, schools and different groups in the workplace have been making a great effort to launch their Alpha Courses in September and October, supported by many of these warm personal invitations fueled by one single reason - love.

We just can't wait to hear their own stories, after taking this first step of having a delightful dinner with new friends, and after the 15 talks around the big questions of life......

From Brompton Road to Beijing, Millions Have Attended An Alpha Course - An Interview with the Rev. Nicky Gumbel in The Independent

In an earlier interview with The Independent, Rev. Nicky Gumbel explained how the Alpha Course, started as a Course for their own church (Holy Trinity Brompton) in London, has grown to a Course that appeals to people "outside the church". According to statistics of 2008, the Course now boasts a 13-million strong attendees worldwide.

Nicky said, "the idea of Alpha is, well, the way we describe it now, is as a way to explore the meaning of life, an opportunity. Nobody has to explore the meaning of life. We don't force anyone to do Alpha. All we say is that if you do want to do it, we want to make it available to you, wherever you are, initially in this country, and then anywhere in the world. So if you live in Beijing, we want to make sure that you can do Alpha if you want to do it."

Nicky has not plucked "Beijing" from out of the air, as an example of Alpha's reach. "Yeah. Alpha runs in China. I don't know exactly how it runs. But we did a conference in Hong Kong for 2,000 Chinese leaders, and the Government were represented there."

"We've been talking to the Government for some years. It's slow, but they are changing. The best way for Alpha to go into China is through the official channels, certainly in the initial stages it would be much the best if we could work in that way with them."

"There is a huge spiritual hunger in China"

Nicky continued, "there is a huge spiritual hunger in China - more than anywhere I've experienced anywhere in the world. You can see it among the Chinese here in London. They are so interested and open and responsive. And our brief experience of Chinese people is of responsiveness to Christ. There is almost no resistance in a sense. They are so eager to hear."

First Hong Kong GAT team to reach the Himalayas

Delegate and GAT training team photo

The first GAT (Global Alpha Training) team, led by Nigel and Jill Raymont, with a total of seven brothers and sisters from The Vine Christian Fellowship (The Vine) in Hong Kong went to Nepal earlier this year. The team reached out to church leaders in the Hindu Kingdom in the Himalayas and about 80 pastors and leaders participated in the two-day training.

The team brought with them training materials in Nepalese to the churches in Nepal. The Vine has engaged a Nepalese Christian publishing company to translate the core Alpha course material into Nepalese.

GAT is an initiative which aims to send teams of four to eight people from churches in one country to those of another to train those interested in running Alpha. Last year, more than 40 teams consisting of hundreds of people have already been sent out from different countries in the world.

The Vine team gave training and modeled Alpha talks during the 2-day training. The aim is to show the Nepalese pastors and church leaders how to effectively use the Alpha Course as a tool to preach the gospel, so that those yet to know Jesus will receive salvation and live out a blessed life.

The Vine GAT team was totally encouraged by the reception, the receptiveness and the hospitality of their receiving country. They expressed readiness to go wherever God takes them to next on a GAT visit.

In Hong Kong, churches that are currently running an Alpha Course could consider to combine their short-term mission trips with GAT, as Hong Kong is called to a significant role to preach the gospel to Chinese communities outside of Hong Kong, in particular the Greater China.

Words from the Author, Ken Costa

Ken Costa tells us that the book was written to help Christians find real purpose at work. He wrote earlier this year in the UK Daily Telegraph asking the profound question "What is the moral and spiritual character of our times ?". He highlights the fact that we have been giving financial matters an exaggerated role in our lives, resulting in the enslavement of our human spirit. He believes the culprit lies in our divorcing economics from the moral and spiritual dimensions of life. Couple this with the collapse of trust in politics, the breakdown of our social structure, and the lack of purpose felt by individuals, then we have a recipe for national despondency.

In "GOD AT WORK" Ken gives us a vision to revive individuals to live a fully integrated life marked by personal fulfillment and service to others. This moral spirit enables us to enjoy life, to add value through our work and to enjoy the benefits of financial reward while remaining responsive to the needs of others….

Ken Costa, Chairman of Lazard International was formerly Vice Chairman of UBS. He is also Chairman of Alpha International. Through his 30 years plus career as an Investment Banker, Ken is uniquely qualified to write on how we as Christians can face the challenges of the workplace.

The 'God at Work' course consists of 6 sessions (following the same topics as the book):

1. Work Matters
2. Ambition & Life Choices
3. Tough Decisions
4. Stress & Work-Life Balance
5. Failure, Disappointment & Hope
6. Money & Giving

The first "GOD AT WORK" course in Hong Kong is now underway with about 20 participants, with leaders coming from Union Church.
